It's a naturally occuring soluble fiber. Inulin doesn't raise blood sugar levels, so it may help people with diabetes. It also stimulates the growth of friendly bacteria in the large intestine. However, because it is a purified fiber, it doesn’t come with the various vitamins and minerals that accompany the dietary fiber that one gets from whole foods.
