Panel is Part of a Summit Featuring Legislators, Public Health Professionals & Nutrition Advocates

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), The American Heart Association, and Bronx Health REACH will convene public health professionals, New York City and State legislators, and nutrition advocates next Tuesday, September 21 for a Nutrition Policy Virtual Summit. The summit will include a panel, beginning at 2:30 pm ET on policies to require added sugar and sodium warnings on chain restaurant menus. In New York City, where sodium warnings are already required on chain restaurant menus, Council Member Mark Levine has sponsored a bill to require warnings for menu items with more than a day’s worth of added sugars (50 grams).

Recent data released by CSPI showed that even most “small” drinks sold at large fast food chains contain more than a day’s worth of added sugars, and more than 85 percent of New York City residents (and 78 percent statewide) support added sugar warnings on chain menus. A bill sponsored by Senator Rivera being considered at the state level would extend requirements for sodium warnings to restaurant chains across the state.

The Summit will kick off at 1:00 pm with keynote speaker Marion Nestle, Paulette Goddard Professor, of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health, Emerita, at New York University. See the agenda.
