Our goal in deploying community prioritized policy innovation grants is to spur innovation at the local and state level by funding community prioritized policy and advocacy work within some of CSPI’s existing broad issue areas. Work under these grants must center authentic community engagement in conceptualizing, designing, and implementing the policy campaign. We are open to funding campaigns that are in different stages of development – for existing campaigns, applications should describe the community engagement process that has taken place to date. We are specifically interested in partnering with organizations that are led by and mission-oriented to improving conditions that affect the quality of life for Black, Indigenous, and/or Latina/o/e people.

In addition to state and local policy work, CSPI is also focused in parallel on advocacy at the federal level on important legislation. For instance, Congress is currently undergoing renewal of the Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act and there are timely needs for advocates to partner with us to protect and promote strong nutrition standards and increase access to healthy school meals. To support our work, we are looking to partner with state and local organizations in key geographies to join in these advocacy efforts, through direct and grassroots lobbying activities.
At this time, CSPI will no longer be offering Federal Lobbying Grants to advocate for SNAP in the 2023 Farm Bill. We will instead be using our limited funds to support specific priorities related to nutrition research in two key states - MI and AR. We apologize to those that expressed initial interest and welcome any questions about CSPI’s strategy for SNAP advocacy in the Farm Bill. Additionally, if you are in Michigan or Arkansas and would like to get involved in this work, please contact jjohnson@cspinet.org.

Through this grant opportunity, CSPI seeks to encourage projects that will strengthen the power of culturally specific and cross-racial organizations, including those led by Black, Indigenous, and other people of color. We are excited to fund the critical and often unseen community and powerbuilding work that is critical for successful policy passage and supports sustaining the movement towards an equitable food system. Successful projects will include three core activities: convening community members, building skills and power, and co-creating programmatic and policy solutions to pressing issues in the food system.
