Statement of CSPI president Dr. Peter G. Lurie

We at the Center for Science in the Public Interest remain appalled by the violence and racist hatred on display in the attack on the Capitol a week ago today, and by the prospect of more of the same across the country this week.

Last week’s attack was carried out in the service of obvious and repeatedly disproven lies about the election—lies freshly retold by the President to the assembled mob before it stormed the Capitol, threatened its occupants, killed a police officer, and contributed to the deaths of five others.

The importance of truth in the service of democracy cannot be overstated and is under attack from the highest office in the land. We call on the Congress to hold the President accountable for the damage being done to our democratic norms and institutions and to legally remove the President from office.
