The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) hereby submits this petition to request that the Commissioner of Food and Drugs issue a final guidance identifying 10-year voluntary sodium-reduction goals. In addition, we ask that the agency establish intermediate targets, develop a plan to monitor and evaluate compliance by industry, and maintain a public database of the products that are the largest contributors to sodium exposure. These requests are consistent with the White House National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health which recommends “facilitating sodium reduction in the food supply by issuing longer-term, voluntary sodium targets for industry.”
