CSPI Letter Opposing Amendment Giving USDA Sole Authority Over Cultured Meat Amendment Letter

The Center for Science in the Public Interest and Consumer Federation of America are urging congressional appropriators to scuttle a provision in the House Agriculture Appropriations bill which would give the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and not the Food and Drug Administration, exclusive regulatory authority over cultured meats produced through cell technology.

In a letter to appropriators, CSPI and CFA say the rider is unnecessary, and would disrupt the agreement announced by USDA and the FDA earlier this month that the two agencies would work collaboratively and appropriately to oversee the safety of these products. Plus, proper regulation of the safety of cultured meat requires the FDA’s unique experience with novel ingredients, animal feed, and biotechnology.
