CSPI letter to Congress re: School food service during COVID-19 pandemic

Ask Congress to Help Hungry Families and Protect Workers

School food service programs are playing a central role feeding communities and food service workers are part of the frontline. This letter lays out what investments are needed to ensure school food service operations remain fiscally solvent during and after the pandemic, including:

  • Requiring FEMA to coordinate meal distribution in cooperation with the USDA
  • Extending the Pandemic-Electronic Benefits Transfer (P-EBT) program through the summer
  • Providing personal protective equipment (PPE) for food service workers
  • Providing funding relief for school nutrition programs to cover costs incurred

And other funding boosts, grants, and administrative flexibility to allow low-income students and families to access nutritionally sound food during this public health and economic crisis.
