USDA petition to establish enforceable standards targeting salmonella types of greatest public health concern

The groups submit this petition urging USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service to modernize its food safety standards by establishing enforceable standards targeting Salmonella types of greatest public health concern while reducing all Salmonella and Campylobacter in poultry. We also ask that FSIS ensure the safety of the food supply chain from farm to fork by requiring slaughter establishments to adopt and implement effective supply chain programs.

Comment on FDA proposed rule on labratory accreditation for analysis of foods

Comments to the Food and Drug Administration signed by CSPI, the Center for Food Safety, the Consumer Federation of America, Consumer Reports, and Food & Water Watch. The Proposed Rule, promulgated under new authority created by the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), is a step towards improving the reliability of testing used to ensure food safety. Such testing is vital to identify the presence of harmful pathogens, allergens, and chemical contaminants in food and will be particularly important for strengthening the safety of imported food. However, we are concerned that the agency has construed its authority too narrowly, requiring accredited testing only in a few circumstances outside the context of food imports.

Trump administration indefinitely delays key food safety protections

All Americans, regardless of their political affiliation, want safe food. That’s why the Food Safety Modernization Act passed with broad bipartisan support. Make no mistake: The Trump administration is today undermining that landmark legislation by indefinitely delaying enforcement of the rules that would put it into effect.
