Healthy retail

Eating a healthy diet—one that is rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and low in saturated fat, salt, and added sugar—is linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, and other health conditions. We can only eat healthfully when healthy options are available and affordable where we shop and live. Three-quarters of Americans’ calories come from supermarkets, dollar stores, and small food stores.  Unfortunately, where food is located within the supermarket and where supermarkets are located within communities are determined by supermarket profits, not public health. The goal of healthy retail is to transform the food retail environment into a place that promotes health.
