The Steering Committee of the Trans Atlantic Consumer Dialogue, together with The Pew Charitable Trusts, presents "Food Safety on Two Continents: Emerging Pathogens and Policies" on June 6, 2012. The conference will address the food safety challenges facing the food supply chain today, including those presented by emerging pathogens and industrial meat production, and frameworks to prevent and respond to foodborne illness. Caroline Smith deWaal, director of food safety at Center for Science in the Public Interest, will moderate the introductory panel on food safety challenges to the food supply chain, contribute to a discussion on emerging pathogens, and wrap up the conference with closing remarks. The conference will be preceded by the Consumer Rights Reception, which marks the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s address to Congress on consumer rights. The reception will be held on Tuesday 5th June, 6:30–8pm at The Pew Charitable Trust Conference Centre.

Managing the Risk of Foodborne Hazards: STECs & Antibiotic Resistant Pathogens

The Pew Charitable Trusts and the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) are partnering on a one day conference in Washington, D.C. to discuss the growing problems of antibiotic resistant pathogens and emerging strains of shiga-toxin producing Escherichia coli (STECs) in our food supply. The conference will gather experts to discuss current science, knowledge gaps, public health implications and practical solutions. Recommendations from the conference will be captured in a white paper that summarizes the discussions and specific recommendations to enhance the collaborative response to emerging foodborne hazards for federal agencies and other stakeholders.
