Americans consume way too much sodium and not enough potassium, increasing their risk for high blood pressure, stroke, and heart attacks. Replacing some of the sodium chloride (salt) in the food supply with potassium chloride could help!

The Food and Drug Administration has been asked to consider a cleaner, friendlier name for this ingredient: “potassium salt.” This simple name change could make potassium chloride more appealing to consumers and encourage more companies to use it. That would decrease sodium levels in food and help prevent high blood pressure. Unfortunately, the FDA’s proposed name—“potassium chloride salt”— is longer, more confusing, and less likely to spur companies to make the switch. Send a message to the FDA and voice your support for the name “potassium salt.”
