About the Center for Science in the Public Interest Some have called the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) the "Food Police." The problems we try to solve are not usually crimes, but unsafe products, deceptive advertising, and laws that need to be changed. CSPI encourages Congress to pass new nutrition and food-safety laws, encourages government agencies to sponsor nutrition campaigns, and urges food companies to change the way they make, sell, and advertise food to make food safer and to make it easier for people to eat well and be more physically active. CSPI's newsletter, Nutrition Action Healthletter, has won many awards for its articles on healthy eating and is the largest-circulation health newsletter in the country. Because of CSPI's leadership in nutrition, food safety, and other issues: Most packaged foods must have "Nutrition Facts" labels; Millions of Americans have changed their food choices at popular restaurants (thanks to CSPI's widely publicized studies on the nutritional content of restaurant meals); All alcoholic beverages display a health warning; and The government is doing more to reduce the risk of "food poisoning."
