The UK is seen by some as having the most developed market for functional foods in Europe.(123) Unfortunately, many functional foods sold in the UK appear to be little more than marketing gimmicks that attempt to differentiate one manufacturer’s product from another and justify an increase in price rather than genuine efforts to improve the public’s health. That problem may stem from the fact that the UK functional foods market is essentially unregulated.
