POINTS TO
MAKE IN YOUR LETTER TO THE USDA ON
GROUND BEEF LABELING
- Approximately 400,000 Americans a year die as a result of an unhealthy diet and a sedentary
lifestyle
- Ground beef adds more fat to the average American's diet than any other food
- A diet high in either saturated fat or red meat may raise the risk of colon and prostate cancers
- Consumers have a right to know the nutritional content of the ground beef sold in
supermarkets
- The USDA should stop exempting ground beef and fresh meat from labeling rules that apply to
all other foods
- Urge the USDA to require full "Nutrition Facts" labels on all fresh meat, ground beef, and
poultry
- Ground beef should not be allowed to make "percent lean" claims unless it is low in fat
