Statement of Bruce Silverglade
on FDA Approval of Benecol Margarine
The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is pleased that the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) insisted on reviewing Benecol Margarine before allowing it to be
marketed. Benecol offers another way to lower heart-disease risk.
We are greatly troubled, however, that FDA conducted its review of Benecol in secret
and did not provide the public an opportunity to comment.
We are also concerned that the FDA has failed to review many other functional foods that
contain unapproved herbal-medicine additives.
Without clear rules and open decision-making, consumers will be faced with an explosion
of deceptive claims on junk foods whose safety and effectiveness are based on junk science.
