CSPI Applauds Connecticut School Foods Plan

Statement of CSPI Nutrition Policy Director Margo Wootan

February 1, 2006

We applaud Connecticut Governor Jodi Rell and Connecticut Senate President Pro Tempore Donald Williams for championing children's health by taking bipartisan action to improve the foods available to kids during the school day. The school beverage standards announced today are among the strongest in the nation and will greatly improve the diets of children in schools. The bill will replace soda with healthful drinks, and also includes strong financial incentives for schools to adopt the state's nutrition standards for snack foods sold in vending machines, a la carte lines, school stores, and fundraisers.

End Hunger Connecticut and others deserve a great deal of credit for working tirelessly toward these landmark school nutrition reforms.
