78% of respondents to a recent national survey say they are concerned about the issue of hunger. 60% say that the federal government should take responsibility. More than 726,900 people used a food bank in March 2000. That’s more than double the 1989 total. 40% of these people were under the age of 18. Experts agree that good nutrition improves performance in school and is much more cost effective than medical treatment after the onset of illness.
