Action Alert: NCAA Reconsidering Alcohol Policies; Ask Leaders to Say No to Beer Ads

February 10, 2005

Background:

This April, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Board of Directors will reconsider its alcohol policies. That review presents a tremendous opportunity to accomplish one of the Campaign for Alcohol-Free Sports TV’s major goals: to end beer ads during college sports.

The Board of Directors is made up of 18 college presidents from Division I schools and is led by two chairmen. Please write to those higher education leaders to express your concern about the tie between college sports and beer ads and urge them to eliminate the broadcast of beer ads during NCAA sporting events.

If you can send only one or two letters, please write to incoming Chair Philip Austin of the University of Connecticut and outgoing Chair Robert Hemenway of the University of Kansas. If you can, please also send letters to any or all of the 16 other Board members, especially if any are from schools in your state. For a full list of the Board and contact information, click here.

To read more about the NCAA’s review of its alcohol policies, read the Jan. 27 USA Today article.

On Feb. 2, USA Today published three letters to the editor; all support the Campaign’s concerns.

You can help maintain this buzz and get the NCAA to do the right thing by writing to the above Board members – please act soon.

Thanks for your continued support of the Campaign. Please let us know if you have any further questions.
