Marketing Director – Full Time
The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is a non-profit health-advocacy group based in Washington, D.C., that focuses on nutrition and food safety. CSPI publishes Nutrition Action Healthletter, the nation's largest-circulation nutrition newsletter. CSPI’s three main goals are to: provide valuable, objective information to the public and policymakers; represent citizens' interests before legislative, regulatory, and judicial bodies; and ensure that advances in science are used for the public's good. CSPI is supported largely by the 900,000 U.S. and Canadian subscribers to its Nutrition Action Healthletter and by foundation grants.
The Marketing Director plans, directs, and manages the direct response marketing and market research for subscriber-based and donor-based programs by performing the following duties.
Responsibilities include the following for both U.S. and Canada. Other duties may be assigned.
- Provide vision, leadership, and strategy for sustainable growth of all direct response and market research programs.
- Create and track a detailed marketing program budget to project income, expenses and cash flow.
- Manage all aspects of subscriber acquisition and renewal, gift subscription promotions, subscriber-to-donor conversion, donor appeals and editorial print products.
- Conduct database segmentation, track campaign results and perform detailed analysis.
- Oversee copywriters and designers of all direct response materials.
- Liaise with list broker/manager on direct mail list selection, modeling, list enhancements and promotion of house file.
- Manage staff in accordance with organization’s policies including hiring, training, and evaluating performance.
- Ensure adherence to purchase order and production procedures, and to production schedules.
- Follow postal requirement changes.
- Recommend circulation management improvements (customer service, fulfillment, and strategic planning.
- Suggest database maintenance and hygiene/accuracy improvements.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and at least 10 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated experience in direct mail subscription-based and donor-based programs – designing campaigns and tracking performance, testing variables, and analyzing results. Preferably in an agency or nonprofit environment.
- Staff management experience in leading, supervising, and evaluating employees.
- Demonstrated experience developing and managing budgets as well as work plans, including the ability to accurately track and report against goals.
- Experience managing a well-recognized brand.
- Strong data analysis skills, knowledge of best practices for maximizing performance in a direct marketing campaign and the ability to translate research into strategy.
- Highly self-motivated with the ability to work collaboratively with others across functions.
- Outstanding proficiency in MS Office, specifically Excel.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to communicate effectively and concisely (both in writing and orally); and strong editing skills.
- Creative thinker. Comfortable working independently and as part of a team to develop engaging and creative ways to advance and communicate CSPI’s brand.
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical, organizational, and administrative skills.
- Experience in managing and negotiating with various production vendors.
- Comfort working in a fast paced environment with tight deadlines while managing multiple projects.
