Project Coordinator - Nutrition Policy – Full Time

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is a non-profit health-advocacy group based in Washington, D.C., that focuses on nutrition and food safety. CSPI publishes Nutrition Action Healthletter, the nation's largest-circulation nutrition newsletter. CSPI’s three main goals are to: provide valuable, objective information to the public and policymakers; represent citizens' interests before legislative, regulatory, and judicial bodies; and ensure that advances in science are used for the public's good. CSPI is supported largely by the 850,000 U.S. and Canadian subscribers to its Nutrition Action Healthletter, individual donors, and foundation grants.

Under the Director of Nutrition Policy, this position assists with programmatic and administrative projects in nutrition policy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Draft letters, memos, fact sheets, talking points, emails and other advocacy and web-based materials.
  • Conduct policy research.
  • Work with state and local advocates and organizations to support nutrition policies.
  • Work with congressional staffers and state and local policy makers via phone calls and emails.
  • Assist with grassroots organizing activities including arranging constituent meetings with policy makers and coordinating letter writing campaigns. Draft and post Convio alerts.
  • Attend coalition meetings with coalition partners.
  • Track and support state and local legislation and policies.
  • Gather information and answer questions from advocates and organizations about department materials, projects, and policies.
  • Maintain coalition membership databases, lists, and email addresses. Help keep website updated.
  • Assist with organizing department events, including press conferences, congressional briefings, conferences, webinars, and meetings.
  • Scan for and disseminate articles for CSPI daily clippings and for Nutrition Policy department.
  • Coordinate meetings and travel for director of nutrition policy.
  • Order materials and publications, and maintain subscriptions and organization memberships.
  • Assist with other departmental activities as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in nutrition, public policy, health education or a related field and two years of policy experience; or a Master’s degree in nutrition, public policy or public health.
  • Public interest commitment.
  • Excellent research and writing skills with the ability to write routine correspondence, reports and fact sheets.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to speak effectively to individuals about on-going projects.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Computer proficiency with MSOffice applications and database programs, with an emphasis on Word, Excel and PowerPoint; experience with online research tools.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and frequent deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently, with supervision and as part of a team.
