Food Day Organizers - Temporary Positions Available – Part Time
The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is a non-profit health-advocacy group based in Washington, D.C., that focuses on nutrition and food safety. CSPI publishes Nutrition Action Healthletter, the nation's largest-circulation nutrition newsletter. CSPI’s three main goals are to: provide valuable, objective information to the public and policymakers; represent citizens' interests before legislative, regulatory, and judicial bodies; and ensure that advances in science are used for the public's good. CSPI is supported largely by the 850,000 U.S. and Canadian subscribers to its Nutrition Action Healthletter, individual donors, and foundation grants.
Food Day is a major national event that CSPI is sponsoring in October 2013. The goal is to educate the public and support policy measures on such issues as diet and health, sustainable agriculture, and food insecurity.
We are searching for Food Day Organizers in the following geographic areas which represent priority areas for the national campaign: Boston, MA; New York, NY; San Francisco, CA; Jackson, MS; and New Orleans, LA.
Responsibilities include:
- Assist with outreach to food and agriculture organizations in your geographic area and support Food Day event planning and network‐building efforts.
- Identify and work with local activists in your geographic area, create outreach materials and manage communications, maintain a contact database, host Food Day planning meetings, and answer inquiries from the public about how to get involved in Food Day.
- Maintain regular communication with the national Food Day staff.
- Assist national Food Day staff with research or other tasks as requested.
Qualifications include:
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college with a focus on an issue relevant to Food Day; or one or two years related experience and/or training.
- Strong oral communication skills, including ability to cold-call potential Food Day participants; and attention to detail are required.
- Must be self-starter who takes initiative and can work independently from remote location.
- Experience, or strong interest, in grassroots organizing, and ability to develop strategies for making new contacts for the campaign.
- Excellent team player who can work collaboratively with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to meet campaign deadlines.
Food Day Organizers are home-based, independent contractors who will work a minimum of 20 hours per week, and will be paid $1,000 per month. Positions are available now through Food Day.
