Project Coordinator - Nutrition Action Healthletter – Full Time

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is a non-profit health-advocacy group based in Washington, D.C., that focuses on nutrition and food safety. CSPI publishes Nutrition Action Healthletter, the nation's largest circulation nutrition newsletter. CSPI provides valuable, objective information to the public, represents citizens' interests before legislative, regulatory, and judicial bodies, and ensures that advances in science are used for the public's good. CSPI is supported largely by the 850,000 U.S. and Canadian subscribers to its Nutrition Action Healthletter and by foundation grants.

The Project Coordinator will gather, compile and proof data related to food products and their nutritional content. This position works with the NAH team and reports to the Senior Nutritionist.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Compile Product Comparison information into NAH database.
  • Research, purchase, and composite foods for analysis in restaurant studies.
  • Elicit nutrition, ingredient, and sales information from manufacturers, restaurants and trade groups.
  • Proof the Product Comparison, Right Stuff, Food Porn and Healthy Cook sections of NAH.
  • Coordinate purchasing products for Product Comparison, Right Stuff, Food Porn, and pictures in NAH.
  • Dissect foods for NAH articles and restaurant surveys.
  • Prepare recipes for NAH, Healthy Cook or Quick Tips, when necessary.
  • Read supermarket and restaurant trade journals to suggest ideas for food products that should be reviewed, particularly for Right Stuff and Food Porn.
  • Purchase and/or check nutrient and ingredient contents for NAH and other CSPI projects.
  • Under the direction of the Director of Nutrition and Senior Nutritionist, collect and send information to reporters.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; or two to four years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Nutrition background strongly preferred.
  • Proven research, proofreading and data collections skills.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to speak effectively and professionally to individuals inside and outside of CSPI.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and frequent deadlines.
  • Computer proficiency with MSOffice applications and database programs, with an emphasis on Word and Excel; and experience with online research tools.
  • Ability to work independently, with supervision and as part of a team.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
